Find your social media freedom in the music

by Christine Varriale

Let’s face it. MySpace is of the past. It’s hard to find a central location online to connect with friends about music. If you’re an audiophile of the modern age, take a look at these five places to share and discover new music.

1.      Last.fm

Last.fm is a great way to keep track of what you and your friends are currently listening to. You can check your musical compatibility with your friends. There’s also an iTunes scrobbler to send what you’re listening to on iTunes and your iPod to your Last.fm profile. It lets you know when your favorite bands are playing in concert near you too. One of my favorite features is to send my top Last.fm artists of the week to my Twitter and Tumblr to share what I’m listening to a lot lately.

2.     Turntable.fm

Turntable.fm is fairly new and still invite-only, but if one of your Facebook friends has it, you can sign up. In Turntable.fm, there are rooms where certain people DJ different styles of music. You can join the room, listen in, and play some of your own music when it’s your turn to DJ.

3.     Songkick

Songkick is a great way to keep track of all the concerts you’ve ever been to. You can import your last.fm, Pandora, and iTunes to find when your favorite artists are playing near you. Anyone who went to a concert can upload photos and setlists, so you can remember the awesome time you had to the fullest.

4.       Subscribe to a music blog

You probably have a certain genre of music you love. Find a blog that posts about your favorite music genre and subscribe to it. It’s a great way to keep up to date with your favorite artists. A few good ones to follow are Allston Pudding (run by our own @dschiffty), Pitchfork, and Stereogum.

5.     Follow the #musicmonday hashtag on Twitter

You can post what music you’re loving right now and tag it with #musicmonday on Mondays. Other people can look at the hashtag by searching to check out what a lot of people are listening to. This hashtag has been around on Twitter for at least as long as I have.

So explore my fellow audiophiles. Discover new music and share your own.
